God has not left you helpless to change the course of our nation

The Bible is replete with references to the important role families play in the extension of God’s kingdom on earth. Families make up nations and nations stand or fall before God in accordance with the daily spiritual and moral choices that their families make. Consider just a few of the many negative and positive texts that support this point:  Jeremiah 10:25 says, “Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You and on the families that do not call on Your name; For they have devoured Jacob; They have devoured him and consumed him and have laid waste his habitation”; Psalm 22:27 says, “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You.” But perhaps the most well-known and definitive from this list, is Joshua 24:15, which says “…choose for yourselves today whom you will serve (worship)…but as for me and my house, we will serve (worship) the LORD.”

A correct interpretation of the above Old Testament passages will encourage the leader of a family to see his family’s role in moving our nation away from its spiritually crumbling state toward a more Scripturally influenced one.  In all three passages we see that truly born-again men (John 3:1-7; 2 Corinthians 5:17), godly Christian fathers, are key! So then, the most important job on the face of the earth is to be a godly Christian father who leads (i.e., pastors) his family (or little church) daily in the paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3). Why? Because such sanctified conduct will affect their homes, which will affect their churches, which will eventually drastically affect their nation. Malachi 4:5-6 affirms, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

Specifically, such men will affect their world in three vital areas: (1) Familial Posterity -The present generation and the ones to come will be the fruit of their present prayers, example and godly labors; (2) Ecclesiastical Urgency – Their ministry passion, not pew vegetation, will make their church a spiritually healthier realm; and (3) Global Spirituality –Their prayers, integrity, ethics, and out-right spiritual saltiness and brightness (Matthew 5:13-16), both within their nation and in the nations of the world, will hold back utter destruction and be the very impetus for spiritual awakening (Habakkuk 3:2; Acts 3:19-20; 1 Timothy 2:1-8). This is the precise point the Psalmist was making to Israel in Psalm 78:5-8 when he said, “He (God) established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

Therefore, let us no longer be amazed as to why the nations are in an uproar (Psalm 2:1). For the puritan Richard Baxter’s words still ring true, “Holy families are the chief preservers of the interest of religion in the world.” So, Christian men, “Act like men” (1 Corinthians 16:13), and embrace your calling to walk with God, lead your home for Christ, serve faithfully in your local church, while learning to say with D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, “The greatest privilege in this life is to be a faithful member of a local evangelical church;” and determine, by God’s grace, to make your life, vote, and prayers be heard both before and in the 2012 presidential election (Deuteronomy 16:18).  May God help us all to see that it is only through this way of thinking, living, and praying, that we will be able to impact our home, church, city, county, state, region, nation and world for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ alone!
