“Do You Believe in Hell – Part 4 of 5?”

Today and next week we’ll be concerned with our final two parts of this brief series on the Biblical Doctrine of hell. Specifically, we will study the Scriptural reality of there being assuredly some who are and will be “shocked” inhabitants in hell.

In fact, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself actually taught us that there are, and shall always be people (“never-dying souls”), who, at death, expected to wake up in heaven; but instead, woke up in hell … But how could a sporadic or even regular attender in Christ’s church, wake up in hell? The gospel Luke 13:22-30 (see below) tells us that there are two reasons that prove it: (1) A lack of spiritual urgency, and (2) a life of spiritual complacency…Just read, with me, the following sobering words from our Lord’s own lips, in Luke 13:22-30, “And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. And someone said to Him, ‘Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?’ And He said to them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, “Lord, open up to us!” then He will answer and say to you, “I do not know where you are from.” Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets”; and He will say, “I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from me you evildoers.” ‘In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.’” Indeed, and our Lord Jesus Christ unmistakably also taught us, that there are and shall always be, shocked inhabitants arriving in hell (2 Timothy 3:1-5; 2 Timothy 4:1-3; Matthew 7:21-23; 13:24-30, 36-43; 25:31-34). O dear friends, this is no joke! Take note, those who were once religious church-attenders, are now screaming in hell (Matthew 13:42)! This frightening reality begs a Scriptural description of this place. In other words, what is hell really like? The Bible tells us that hell is a place of unspeakable, conscious, punishment of unrepentant sinners, who are endlessly weeping and gnashing their teeth in hell-fire (Matthew 8:12; 13:50; 25:41; Luke 16:24). Last, despite what the 13th century Italian Roman Catholic medieval poet Dante Alighieri wanted us to believe about Satan and his vile demon’s role of their tormenting men in hell, Revelation 20:10 tells us, that he and his demons, will instead be the ones being tormented by the living God! Further, the tormenting and consuming fire in hell, is God Himself (Hebrews 12:29; Psalm 139:8, “If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there”). Helpfully, Pastor John MacArthur clearly affirmed the reality of our Lord’s teaching about there being “shocked inhabitants” in hell (in Luke 13:22-30 above), when he said,  “It’s one thing to go to hell and know you are going there, not expecting anything different. It’s quite a different thing to end up in hell when you thought you were a Christian.” Dear reader, this kind of priority thinking and living about this sobering doctrine, begins with our heart preparation today, to encounter the living God tomorrow morning; in both our public Worship, through the praises and prayers of His people; and through the reading and preaching of His Holy inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word! Soli Deo Gloria!
