“God’s Design of the Family”

Donald Trump is now the 45th President of the United States of America. What all of that means, we shall soon find out. But, what we do know is that his political platform (and that of the GOP) is very encouraging to those, that is, who believe in the God of the Bible and trust that His, “… Word is a lamp to my [our] feet and a light to my [our] path” (Psalm 119:105).

In fact, it’s an outright miracle that he could win the presidency against such a formable opponent, and after an eight-year assault upon the Judeo-Christian worldview by our last president, particularly, in regards to God’s design of the family. However, this massive cultural shift in American history, maybe even in the history of western civilization, did not really kick into high gear before our previous president’s first term, but during George W’s first. It began when syndicated columnist Cal Thomas reported what had just taken place in Washington DC, when he said, “the end of the constitution has come ... thousands of years of law, history, and theology have been dismissed.” He was, of course, referring to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on personal privacy (2003). In that ruling, the Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas in a 6-3 decision and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in 13 other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory … which culminated twelve years later, in the Obergefell case and its disastrous 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme, that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage! This legislative decision grievously affirmed homosexual privacy and threw open the door toward a revolution in family life. This culture-shaking event was not the result of a sudden Supreme Court decision, but was the effect of years of homosexual and liberal lobbying that had reshaped the morality of our nation, by capitalizing upon our nation’s moral and political apathy. Indeed, those liberal pundits had been working overtime for years, while the church and the GOP had been drifting from its moral responsibility (NOTE: four of the six affirmative votes in this high court decision were made by Judges who were appointed by Republican presidents). One example, during that period, of the left’s overt effort toward redefining the family was Al and Tipper Gore’s 2002 book, “Joined at The Heart: The Transformation of the American Family” (By the way, the Gore’s were Divorced in 2010). In that wholesale assault upon the traditional family, and its concerted effort at deliberate word deconstruction, the Gores told us that, “the classic nuclear family of our childhood – the breadwinning dad, the homemaker mom, two or three kids – was not gone; but it had become very much a minority of families now ... it is a work in progress ... who’s definition relies less on structure and more on subjective experience.” Put another way, the 21st century family had become whatever felt like a family, even if was two men or two women married to each other, with their adopted children. This was a sad departure from the widely-accepted definition of a family held since time began, “The Family is a man and a woman in a socially-approved bond for the purposes of sharing intimacy and resources and propagating and rearing children.” And the 19th century evangelist D.L. Moody affirmed well its enduring reality, when he said, “I believe the family was established long before the church, and my duty is to my family first.” And only as we recover this vision of the family, will we ever begin to see America great again … So then, let us ask God today to enable us to arise, repent, pray toward, and pursue godliness, as families, both inside and outside the church, the very way He designed for us to be (Genesis 2:24; 4:1-2; Ephesians 5:22-6:4). And let us also specifically pray, “O God, in wrath, remember mercy” (Habakkuk 3:2), while truly believing, by faith, “… where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Romans 5:20). And lastly, let us draw near to God, first, by taking heed to our heart preparation today, for encountering the living God tomorrow, in our public Worship service, both through our praises and prayers to Him, with God’s people; and secondly, through our attending to the reading and preaching of His Holy inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word! Soli Deo Gloria!!
