“Is Satan Alive and Well on Planet Earth? – Part 2”

Last week we began to examine whether or not the commonly held view among evangelicals, that “Satan is alive and well on planet earth,” is Scripturally valid. In that study, we learned that he is presently “a cast-down foe.” This week, we will see that he is also, “a crushed-serpent.”

When I speak of Satan being “a crushed-serpent,” I mean that he was thoroughly-defeated through our Lord’s first-advent ministry, especially, through its final expression upon the Cross! Indeed, God’s promise of salvation entailed the crushing of Satan’s head along with the simultaneous bruising of Christ’s heal (Genesis 3:15). As one theologian put it, “A minor injury to the Messiah would spell the major destruction of Satan.” Satan could neither directly (Matthew 4:1-11), nor indirectly (Matthew 16:23) take Christ out, because he was powerless to take Christ’s life (John 10:18; 14:30)! Therefore, the crucifixion meant the “crushing” or “conquering” of the evil one (Revelation 12:11), and also that Christ’s atonement released His people from the grasp of Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4; 2 Timothy 2:26), rendering him powerless (Hebrews 2:14-15)! And in a more graphic statement, the apostle Paul clearly stated that Christ publically-humiliated the Devil along with his demons (Colossians 2:15). The apostle John described that same event as a total destruction (1 John 3:8). So, let us then never forget that this “crushing” language originated in heaven (Psalm 119:89)! Last, in Genesis 3:15, Moses mentions the woman’s seed (i.e. Christ) as the “crushing” agent of the Serpent, while Galatians 3:16 calls that same seed, Christ. Interestingly, Galatians 3:29 calls every believer a relative of that same seed! Therefore, in Christ, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37), that is, we are super-victors in Christ, as well as present “crushers” of the kingdom of darkness (Romans 16:20)! O Church of Christ, rise up and possess all nations (Psalm 2:8; Matthew 16:18; 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Hebrews 2:8; Revelation 5:9)! Yes, go and declare His glory among all peoples (1 Chronicles 16:24)! Dear friends, we have seen these past two weeks that Satan is presently “a cast-down foe,” as well as, “a crushed-serpent.” Next week, we will conclude this study with the Scriptural assertion, that he is also, “a shackled-dragon” (Matthew 12:28-28; Revelation 20:1-3). So, let’s open our eyes and continually watch, each day, Satan falling like lightning (Luke 10:18)! I leave you with the following wise words of Arthur Dent,“...the power of Satan is not equal to the power of God. It is not so strong, so large, and so wide. It is every way infinitely less.” So then, let us gather tomorrow morning to worship this great King!
