“Is Satan Alive and Well on Planet Earth? – Part 3”

In this final article, in a series of three, concerning whether or not: “Satan is alive and well on planet earth;” we now move to the most typically-contested aspect of our study. That is, helping believers to Scripturally see that Satan is presently both a cast-down foe and a crushed-serpent, is not as difficult as convincing them that he is also, presently, a shackled (or bound) dragon.

I believe, the primary reason for their struggle, rests in the language of Revelation 20:2-3, “And he laid hold of the dragon, ... and bound him for a thousand years, ... so that he should not deceive the nations any longer, ...” Now, what is immediately pointed out by our dear objecting friends, is that Satan is obviously not bound in our day. They commonly say, “Just take a look at the 10:00pm news!” And then, they commonly quote, rapid-fire: 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 2:2; and 1 John 5:19; but, fail to synthesize them with the following verses: James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:9; 1 John 4:4. And, not surprisingly, they then proceed to assure us that Revelation 20:2-3’s fulfillment is still way into the future. However, our response should be, “But, does not Matthew 12:28-29 say that Satan was bound during Christ’s earthly ministry?” Just listen to our Lord Himself, “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then ... or, how can, ... unless He first binds the strong man? And then, He will plunder his house.” Specifically speaking, at Christ’s first advent (Luke 8:31; John 12:31), Crucifixion (Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 3:8) and Resurrection (John 12:32). Beloved, but this restricting or binding of Satan has to do with his former ability to deceive the nations - Revelation 20:3, “... that he should not deceive the nations any longer ...” Therefore, Satan’s death-grip of idolatry over the nations has been shattered by Christ at His first advent, Crucifixion, and the subsequent Apostolic gospel proclamation to all nations (John 1:9; Galatians 4:4; Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 10:17-20; Acts 1:8; 17:30; 26:18). So, in the generations previous to Christ’s coming, God permitted the nations to collectively go astray (Acts 14:16-17), and now, we are called to declare to all men everywhere that they should repent (Acts 17:30). This means that Christ rules the nations (Psalms 2:8-9; Revelations 1:5; 12:5; 19:15-16), and not the evil one; that is, the Devil (Matthew 6:13)! Therefore, the Scripture declares that Satan is not alive and well on planet earth; and that, Christ is now building His church, “...and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18)! Let us then, focus our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2), and continually watch Satan fall like lightning (Luke 10:18), in this present evil age! And may we never forget that, “Satan is only God’s master fencer to teach us to use our weapons” (Samuel Rutherford) - the weapons of: prayer, preaching, and God-centered worship! For His glory alone!
