“Is this World Winding Down?”

Recently, I came across the following quote from an article published by a well-known Christian news service, “It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that the world is getting worse and worse. Evil is rising all around us and the Christian Church is losing ground. I can’t believe how bad things are getting.” A few days later, I came across another article, which included a reference to the above article, and stated, “Many have voiced a similar apprehension. You can hear it in the grocery checkout lines, sports stadiums, and in the pews of our local churches. Multitudes are convinced that the world is presently in ‘Freefall’ and it’s only a matter of time before everything falls apart.”

Therefore, it seems that all of mankind is once again consumed with another end-of-the-world situation, and is presently experiencing panic-attacks because of this certain and soon demise of our civilization as we know it. In fact, it might even be triggered by the result of our Presidential election this fall, but the key player in this scenario is surely to be our Lord Jesus Christ at His “second” coming! However, the problem I have with this guesswork-prophetic stance, is that their prophecies have all been dead wrong since early last century! And you see, these end-time gurus fail to notice that the event they are hoping for, in the not so distant future, will only happen at Christ’s “Final” coming (1 Corinthians 15:20-28). What I am saying is that I also believe that the Earth is going to experience a future meltdown (2 Peter 3:10-11), and that the Lord Jesus Christ will one day, “... be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8), but, I do not believe that it will happen until His “Final” coming has occurred (i.e. because the Bible speaks of many “comings” of God [Both before and after our Lord’s earthly existence – e.g., Isaiah 19:1; Matthew 24:29-34, to name a few]), and then He hands over His Kingdom to His Father (1 Corinthians 15:24). This means that both “The End” and the “Final” coming of our Lord Jesus Christ are not to be expected too soon! This Scriptural certainty, reminds us that we are a part of Christ’s “present” Global “mustard-seed” Church-Construction Team (Matthew 16:18), which is now leavening the whole earth (Matthew 13:31-33)! Therefore, let us continue to move out and obey His command to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20), through the Church’s salt and light ministry (Matthew 5:13-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:5; 1 Peter 3:15), and by its powerful proclamation ministry (Acts 1:8; 8:1,4; 1 Peter 2:9). In addition, let us continue to faithfully do so, until the fullness of the Gentiles, the restoration of Israel, and the blanketing of this earth with gospel-preaching churches has taken place (Romans 11:12,15, 25-29; Isaiah 11:9; 62:6-7; Psalm 22:27-31)! And, let us do away with our present idleness (2 Thessalonians 3:10-11), by simply and faithfully doing God’s business, until He comes (Luke 19:13)! Finally, may our God help us now to apply the words of both John Wesley (“If I knew that Christ were coming back tonight, I don’t think that I would change any of my plans.”) and Martin Luther (“If Christ were coming back tomorrow, I would plant a tree today.”). And may we begin this labor, by our hearts being prepared today, to encounter the living God tomorrow morning, in our public Worship, through the praises and prayers of His people, and through the reading and preaching of His Holy Word! Soli Deo Gloria!
