“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?

Our Lord’s half-brother James once asked the question above, then he answered it with the following words, “Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel (James 4:1-2).

Dear reader, we are a warring people (Job 5:7; Romans 3:23; Jeremiah 17:9) because we are born, by nature, at war with God, our neighbor, and ourselves. So, is it not surprising that the history of mankind has been one long history of war? Allow me to prove this to you through: A Brief History Lesson; A Modern Report; A Spiritual Observation; and with A Practical Application. A Brief History Lesson - Ecclesiastes 3:8 says, there’s ...a time for war, and a time for peace. And the time for peace has not been all that much. Recent statistics reveal that, “...since 3600 BC, the world has known only 292 years of peace! During this period there have been 14,351 wars large and small (this includes: The Hundred Years’ War between England and France [1337-1453]; The Thirty Years’ War between Germany and numerous other European nations [1618-1648]; and The Ten Years’ War between Cuba and Spain [1868-1878]), in which 3.64 billion people have been killed...Since 650 B.C., there have also been 1,656 arms races, only 16 of which have not ended in war. The remainder ended in the economic collapse of the countries involved” (Today in the Word, June 19, 1992). Last, note well Matthew Henry’s affirmation of this truth, “War is a tragedy which commonly destroys the stage it is acted on.” A Modern Report - The Washington Post almost ten years ago reported that the Pentagon had just called for a bolstering of our military with thousands more elite troops to fight terrorists as part of a decades-long plan to expand our efforts to thwart terrorists worldwide. A Spiritual Observation - Friends, terrorism is going to be with us for a long time. Our children and grandchildren, and most likely, our great-grandchildren will still be battling it. However, we know that these evil men will not be victorious (2 Timothy 3:8-9), and many of them, like the apostle Paul (Acts 8:1; 9:1ff), will one day bow their heads and knees in repentance to Jesus Christ! A Practical Application – Memorize, cling to, and war a good warfare like: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ”, and Ephesians 6:17, “…and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.  O may the Holy Spirit tame our souls to such a degree, that we may “fight the good fight of faith” with lion-hearts! For His glory alone!!
