Is Satan Alive and Well on Planet Earth Part 2

 Rev1210.jpg

Two weeks ago, we began to examine whether or not a commonly held doctrinal view among evangelicals was Scripturally-valid. I am referring to the well-worn maxim that “Satan is alive and well on planet earth.” During that initial study, we discovered that Satan is presently a “cast-down foe.” Today, we will see that he is also, at present, a “crushed-serpent.”

When I speak of Satan’s present state in this way, I mean that he was thoroughly defeated by our Lord’s first advent ministry (Matthew 4:12ff), especially through its final expression on that old rugged cross (John 12:31-32)! Remember, in Genesis 3:15, God’s promise of eternal salvation entailed the crushing of Satan’s head and the simultaneous bruising of Christ’s heel. As one theologian put it, “A minor injury to the Messiah would spell the major destruction of Satan.” Satan could neither directly (Matthew 4:1-11), nor indirectly (Matthew 16:23), take Christ out of God’s plan. He was simply powerless to take Christ’s life (John 10:18; 14:30)! Therefore, the crucifixion meant the crushing or overcoming of the evil one (Revelation 12:11). Notice that Christ’s atonement released His blood-bought people (Revelation 5:9) from the grasp of Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4; 2 Timothy 2:26), and rendered powerless that Foul-Fiend (Hebrews 2:14-15)! In a more graphic statement, Paul literally says Christ publically humiliated the Devil and his cohorts (Colossians 2:15). John says Christ appeared to destroy the devil’s works (1 John 3:8). Beloved, let us never forget that the aforementioned is definitive language which has its origin in heaven (Psalm 119:89)! Finally, in Genesis 3:15, Moses mentions the woman’s seed as the crushing agent of the Serpent, while Galatians 3:16 calls that same seed Christ. Interestingly, Galatians 3:29 calls every believer a relative of that same seed! Therefore, in Christ, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) – that is, we are super-victors in Christ, as well as present-crushers of the kingdom of darkness (Romans 16:20)! O Church of Christ, rise up and possess all nations (Psalm 2:8; Matthew 16:18; 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Hebrews 2:8; Revelation 7:9)! Dear reader, we have now seen that Satan is presently a “cast-down foe,” as well as a “crushed-serpent.” In our last study, next week,  on “Is Satan alive and well on planet earth?” We will see that he is also a “shackled or bound dragon” (Matthew 12:28-29; Revelation 20:1-3). Until then, may God grant us grace to “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2)!
